SINOSSI
In una Livorno abbagliata dall’impietoso sole di agosto, che scioglie l’asfalto e scintilla sui guardrail del lungomare, Veronica si muove come una sonnambula, schiacciata dal peso della feroce e indolente vita provinciale. Poi un pomeriggio, nella vertigine degli scogli sul mare, nel vigore dei tuffi, nell’acqua color petrolio, il suo corpo le regala un miracolo di libertà. E da una bruciatura di marmitta che ha sul polpaccio, inizia la sua metamorfosi.
SYNOPSIS
In a Livorno dazzled by the merciless August sun – which melts the asphalt and glints off the seafront guardrails – Veronica moves like a sleepwalker, crushed under the weight of a fierce and indolent provincial life. Then one afternoon, amidst the vertigo of the sea cliffs, the vigor of diving, and the oil-dark water, her body grants her a miracle of freedom. And from the exhaust-pipe burn on her calf, her metamorphosis begins.
BIOGRAFIA DELLA REGISTA
Dopo un Dottorato in Filosofia, Maria frequenta l’École Supérieure des Études Cinématographiques a Parigi dove lavora per ARTE FRANCE. Tornata in Italia, inizia la sua carriera nell’ADV, firmando importanti campagne internazionali sull’inclusione e la diversità clienti come Heineken, Garnier, Procter & Gamble, Nestlè. Il suo lavoro ALBERTINE WHERE ARE YOU? girato in pellicola super 16 mm, ispirato alla Recherche di Proust, è stato premiato per la Miglior Regia alla Settimana Internazionale della Critica della 79 Mostra Internazionale del Cinema di Venezia ed è stato nominato Miglior Cortometraggio al David di Donatello 2023. Attualmente sta scrivendo il suo lungometraggio d’esordio Altrimenti l’inverno, prodotto da CINEDORA.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY
Maria holds a PhD in Philosophy and later attended the École Supérieure des Études Cinématographiques in Paris, where she worked for ARTE FRANCE. Upon returning to Italy, she began her career in advertising, directing major international campaigns on inclusion and diversity for clients such as Heineken, Garnier, Procter & Gamble, and Nestlé. Her film ALBERTINE WHERE ARE YOU?, shot on super 16mm film and inspired by Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, won Best Director at the International Critics’ Week of the 79th Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2023 David di Donatello Awards. She is currently writing her debut feature film, Altrimenti l’inverno (Otherwise, Winter), produced by CINEDORA.
NOTE DI REGIA
La provincia è un mondo che muta di faccia ma che è incapace di cambiare veramente. Che ti tiene ingabbiato, prigioniero. Anche di te stesso. Come fa Livorno con Veronica. Le case in penombra, la città immobile, il pesce sacrificato e santificato, gli androni stantii, le sere di petrolio e metallo sono per Veronica delle oppressioni, delle scissioni, delle sottrazioni di senso. Ma il miracolo è sempre tra la gente, la metamorfosi sta sotto gli occhi di tutti: non come mistero, bene come l’imponderabile quotidiano che può manifestarsi ovunque, anche in una bruciatura di marmitta. Gli scintillii dei riflessi sul mare, i balenii di sole negli specchietti, i barbagli sul fondale e sulla pelle, le squame dei pesci, in mare o nel lavandino, che brillano come paillettes: le cose si muovono e brillano nel mondo immobile di Veronica. E la chiamano.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
The province is a world that alters its appearance but is incapable of truly changing. It keeps you caged, a prisoner. Even of yourself. Just as Livorno does to Veronica. The houses in half-light, the motionless city, the fish both sacrificed and sanctified, the stale building entryways, the evenings of oil and metal – for Veronica, these are oppressions, splittings, subtractions of meaning. Yet the miracle is always found among the people; the metamorphosis unfolds right before everyone’s eyes: not as a mystery, but rather as the daily imponderable that can manifest anywhere, even in an exhaust-pipe burn. The shimmer of reflections on the sea, the flashes of sun in rearview mirrors, the glints on the seabed and on the skin, the fish scales – in the sea or in the sink – shining like sequins: things move and glisten in Veronica’s motionless world. And they are calling to her.
