SINOSSI
In un villaggio bulgaro, Gabo, un bambino di sei anni, assiste allo svanire della coscienza di suo nonno. La sua innocente fiducia nella tradizione dei Kukeri scivola così in una cupa oscurità.

Il direttore della fotografia bulgaro Teodor Stoilov, diplomato alla Warsaw Film School, attinge alle sue radici nella street art e nello skateboard per catturare momenti umani e crudi. Il suo lavoro in Germ gli è valso il premio per la migliore fotografia al Balkan Student Cinefest ed è stato proiettato sia al Sofia Film Festival sia al Chania Film Festival.
La regista finlandese Nellie Rajala, anch’essa diplomata alla Warsaw Film School, si concentra su storie intime e incentrate sui personaggi, spesso viste attraverso gli occhi dei bambini. Il suo film Elf Ring ha vinto il Premio Nazionale all’Oulu International Children and Youth Film Festival e il premio come miglior cortometraggio europeo al Fabriano Film Fest, ottenendo ulteriori riconoscimenti ai festival cinematografici di Rural e Joutseno. Il precedente cortometraggio della coppia, Invisible Sister, ha vinto il premio come miglior film studentesco al Drim Short Film Festival ed è stato selezionato per il Minimalen Film Festival e per i Nordic Film Days di Lubecca.

Bulgarian cinematographer and Warsaw Film School graduate Teodor Stoilov draws from his roots in street art and skateboarding to capture raw, human moments. His work on Germ earned him Best Cinematography at the Balkan Student Cinefest and screened at both the Sofia and Chania Film Festivals.
Finnish director and Warsaw Film School graduate Nellie Rajala focuses on intimate, character-led stories often seen through the eyes of children. Her film Elf Ring took home the National Prize at the Oulu International Children and Youth Film Festival and Best European Short at Fabriano Film Fest, with further prizes at the Rural and Joutseno Film Festivals. The pair’s previous short, Invisible Sister, won Best Student Film at the Drim Short Film Festival and was selected for the Minimalen Film Festival and Lübeck Nordic Film Days.

Questo film ruota attorno al tema della demenza senile. Durante la pre-produzione, mio nonno stava vivendo l’ultima fase della malattia ed è scomparso pochi giorni dopo la fine delle riprese. La sua presenza e le visite che gli facevo hanno plasmato la storia. Fin dall’inizio, siamo stati anche attratti dalla tradizione bulgara dei kukeri. Avendoli visti per tutta la mia infanzia, i costumi, i rituali e il simbolismo mi hanno sempre affascinato. Si tratta di una tradizione bulgara che si ritiene sia stata tramandata fin dai tempi dei Traci e che viene praticata ancora oggi per scacciare il male. Abbiamo cercato di unire questi due mondi: l’intima realtà della demenza e l’essenza mitica dei Kukeri. È stata una sfida complessa, ma ha dato vita a una storia che sentivamo il profondo bisogno di esplorare. Nel profondo, il film esplora ciò che accade a una famiglia quando una persona cara diventa l’ombra di ciò che era, il tutto attraverso una tradizione che sembra invece vivere in eterno.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
This film revolves around the theme of dementia. During pre-production, my grandfather was experiencing it at its final stage and passed away just days after the shoot. His presence and my visits to him shaped the story.From early on, we were also drawn to the Bulgarian tradition of kukeri. Having seen them throughout my childhood, the costumes, rituals, and symbolism fascinated me. It is a Bulgarian tradition that is believed to have been passed down since Thracian times and is still practised today to chase away evil. We attempted to bring the two worlds together, the intimate reality of dementia and the mythical essence of Kukeri. It proved challenging, but it created a story that felt interesting for us to explore. At its heart, the film explores what happens to a family when a loved one becomes a shadow of their past self, through a tradition that seems to live an eternal life.
