SINOSSI

SYNOPSIS
Within the walls of the Monastery of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, in the heart of Rome, a centuries-old tradition is renewed every year. Every January, two newborn lambs are adorned, blessed, and entrusted to the care of one of the cloistered nuns. She tends to them with maternal tenderness, nurturing and feeding them. The presence of the animals serves a precise purpose: with their wool, the nuns of the monastery weave the pallium that the Pope will wear on June 29th, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. In the Holy Year 2025, as the sacred ritual unfolds, the Pope suddenly falls ill.

NOTE DI REGIA

DIRECTOR STATEMENT
I stumbled upon this tradition purely by chance while walking past the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. Seeing two newborn lambs adorned with flowers, joyfully celebrated by the nuns before being blessed by a priest, felt like a revelation. It was in that moment that the idea was born: to follow the journey of these two animals, from their birth to the fulfillment of the sacred ritual that transforms their wool into a vestment to be worn by the Pope. The lambs opened the doors to a secret universe—one regulated by a different rhythm, a different breath, which even the sudden intrusion of History could not shatter. When news arrived of Pope Francis’s passing, despite the profound emotion, the nuns’ routine paused for only a few hours. Life within the Monastery then resumed, timeless and immutable, as it always has.
