OBJET D’ÉNIGME
di Chiara Caterino

Belgio/Italia, 2026, 18’  > A P U L I A N  P R E M I È R E <

SINOSSI

SYNOPSIS
Doors, keys masks, empty rooms – objects spinning endlessly, fragments of an unknown dream or mysterious clues from an unsolvable puzzle. Their repetitive motion suggests a hidden logic, yet the clearer these images become, the deeper the mystery grows, leaving us suspended between reality and illusion, presence and disappearance, revelation and uncertainty.

NOTE DI REGIA

DIRECTOR STATEMENT
With Objet d’énigme, I wanted to question how we see, perceive, and feel through objects that appear both as fragments of a dream and as clues to a mystery. The film does not tell a story in the traditional sense, but proposes a sensory experience where image, movement, and sound unfold in a space open to interpretation, strangeness, and doubt. Keys, doors, rooms, masks: familiar elements that, placed in series, begin to resemble evidence. As they repeat, a latent tension emerges – as if behind each object one could glimpse the trace of a drama, the shadow of a forgotten crime, or the distant echo of a dark  tale, like Bluebeard. The initial impulse of the project was not to illustrate the fairy tale, but to engage with its symbolic architecture: the forbidden rooms, the key that opens onto a secret, the woman threatened with the same fate as those killed before her, the body concealed in a hidden chamber, the house as a site of danger and revelation. These motifs persist in the film in an abstracted form, stripped of narrative, reduced to objects, thresholds, and clues. Captured in 3D by a non-professional LiDAR scanner, the objects are reinterpreted by technology that introduces its own flaws and imperfections. The image is unstable and uncertain, reinforcing an atmosphere of uncanny strangeness. Then the kinescope transfer onto black&white 16mm film, hand-processed in the darkroom, transforms them once again: grain, light, and shadow lend a fragile materiality to those visions. Throgh the sound work I wanted to mirrors this instability through layers of disparate and fragmented sources – archival traces, abstract textures, dissonant noises. Among them, the unsettling insertion of an archival fragment from a judicial recording of a notorious Italian murder case cuts through the layers like an unwelcome clue, amplifying the sense of unease. Just as the images flicker between precision and erasure, the sound shifts between revelation and concealment, between evidence and illusion. With Objet d’énigme, my aim is to remain at the threshold of dream, the unconscious mind, and a detective story. I wanted to create a turning film, a labyrinth of images and sounds.
