SINOSSI
Puolanka, un minuscolo villaggio nel nord della Finlandia, è famoso per il suo spopolamento, ma anche per il cinico senso dell’umorismo con cui lo affronta. Mentre le lunghe sere d’estate si allungano a dismisura, i ragazzi adolescenti festeggiano la patente appena presa girando all’infinito per le solite quattro strade, mentre una generazione più anziana di signori locali, orgogliosamente noti come “Il Parlamento”, si è già piazzata permanentemente al bar della stazione di servizio. Qui, la caccia e il leggendario “Pussy Rally” non sono tabù, ma veri e propri simboli di identità culturale. L’unico mistero che sembra rimanere irrisolto è: dove sono finite tutte le donne?
SYNOPSIS
Puolanka, a tiny village in Northern Finland is famous for its population decline, but also for its dark sense of humor about it. As the long summer evenings stretch out, teenage boys celebrate their new driver’s licences by endlessly circling the same few streets, while an older generation of local gents, proudly known as The Parliament, has already parked itself permanently at the petrol station café. Here, hunting and the legendary “Pussy Rally” aren’t taboos but badges of cultural identity. The only mystery that seems unsolved: where have all the women gone?

Inka Achté è una regista di documentari con base a Helsinki ed è un’ex agente di vendita con quasi vent’anni di esperienza nel settore cinematografico e televisivo. Il suo primo lungometraggio documentario, Boys Who Like Girls, è stato proiettato in oltre trenta festival internazionali. Il suo secondo lungometraggio, Golden Land, ha vinto, tra gli altri premi, il Golden Alexander al Festival del Documentario di Salonicco. Attualmente Achté ricopre anche il ruolo di direttrice artistica del DocPoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival ed è responsabile delle acquisizioni presso Raina, un’agenzia specializzata in ogni aspetto della distribuzione festivaliera di film documentari provenienti da tutto il mondo.
Einari racconta storie che esplorano le connessioni e l’interazione umana. I suoi film sono stati proiettati in prestigiosi festival tra cui CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel e Sheffield DocFest. Il suo ultimo documentario, Karaoke Paradise, ha vinto il Premio Jussi (l’Oscar finlandese) come miglior documentario dell’anno ed è stato inserito nella rosa dei finalisti (shortlist) per i migliori documentari agli European Film Awards.
DIRECTORS BIOGRAPHY
Inka Achté is a Helsinki-based documentary filmmaker and a former sales agent with nearly 20 years of experience working in the film and TV industries. Her first feature documentary Boys Who Like Girls, screened at over 30 international film festivals. Her second feature Golden Land won the Golden Alexander at Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival among other prizes. Achté currently also works as the Artistic Director of DocPoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival and as Head of Acquisitions at Raina, an agency focusing on all aspects of festival distribution of documentary films from all over the world.
Einari tells stories about human interaction & connection. His films have screened at festivals such as CPH:DOX, Vision du Réel, & Sheffield DocFest. His latest documentary, Karaoke Paradise, won the Finnish Jussi Award for Best Documentary of the Year & was shortlisted as a Best documentary for the European Film Awards.

Puolanka Pussy Rally è il secondo film realizzato dal collettivo finlandese Metku, fondato dai registi di documentari Inka Achté ed Einari Paakkanen. Metku realizza film con o senza finanziamenti statali, utilizzando la spontaneità e la gioia come metodi di lavoro. Questo film è nato da una visita di tre giorni del collettivo nel piccolo villaggio di Puolanka, noto per subire uno dei cali demografici più rapidi di tutta la Finlandia. Il politicamente corretto non è ancora arrivato da queste parti. Il “Pussy Rally” o la caccia all’alce fanno parte del DNA culturale e non sono motivo di vergogna. Come in molti ex villaggi agricoli del Nord, i giovani – specialmente le donne, che tendono a puntare a un’istruzione universitaria – si trasferiscono nelle città più grandi del sud, lasciandosi alle spalle uomini soli che hanno ben poco da fare se non andare a caccia: di donne o di alci. Durante la nostra visita a Puolanka abbiamo incontrato due gruppi di uomini: la generazione più anziana, conosciuta a livello locale come “Il Parlamento”, che si riunisce ogni giorno al bar della stazione di servizio del posto, e la generazione più giovane, che sta sperimentando un neonato senso di libertà grazie al conseguimento della patente di guida.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
Puolanka Pussy Rally is the second film made by the Finnish Metku-collective, started by documentary directors Inka Achté and Einari Paakkanen. Metku makes films with or without governmental funding, using spontaneity and joy as working methods. This film was born from the collective’s three day visit to the small village of Puolanka, known for suffering some of the fastest population loss in Finland. Political correctness hasn’t arrived in these parts of the world yet. “Pussy Rally” or moose hunting are part of the cultural DNA and nothing to be ashamed of. Like many former agricultural villages in the North, young people, especially women who tend to strive for university education, move to the bigger cities in the south leaving behind lonely men who have little to do except hunt, either women or moose. During our visit to Puolanka, we encountered two groups of men: the older generation, locally known as “The Parliament” who gather daily at the cafeteria of the local gas station, and the younger generation, who are experiencing a newly found sense of freedom from getting their driver’s licence.
