NOTE DI REGIA

DIRECTOR STATEMENT
Cartografía: an emotional map of Los Angeles, where love and grief intersect. Astrocartography is an astrological method that demonstrates the influence of the planets at different geographic points based on a personal birth chart. My Venus (the planet of love, art and beauty) combined with my Midheaven (a point that represents career) make a line that runs through Los Angeles – a fated circumstance, since it intersects a couple of blocks from my apartment. Undoubedtly, even before knowing about this, my love for Los Angeles has always felt destined. The portal between 2024 and 2025 has been extremely painful. My Nana, my grandmother – more than anything, my true mother – passed away in December, and I have been navigating my grief mostly in Los Angeles, away from our home in Mexico. Moreover, the fires in January left us devastated in the city, and it has felt as if the collective crisis has been mirroring my emotional, personal crisis, and vice versa. David Lynch’s passing has affected me gravely as well; I am weighted with too much grief, also feeling like the umbilical cord has truly been cut. Now that my Nana has passed on, I have been reflecting on the meaning of home and my relationship with her. I have been thinking a lot about my time in Los Angeles, since I started visiting as an early teen, to my university years, to my evolution as an independent filmmaker surrounded by a harsh “entertainment” industry. I feel like I’ve lived different lives here, and this city has embraced all versions of myself in a beautiful way. I have deep appreciation for this place I have called home for almost my entire adult life, and even in this profound sadness that I’m encountering at this stage of my life, I can still sense the beauty and love around me. My grandmother passed away the day my sister, Aitza, moved to Los Angeles, and we immediately thought we took her with us to the city, that she wanted to come with us here. Needless to say, I feel and hear my Nana everywhere I go. “Cartografía” is not just a story, but an emotional map – etched in memory and grief, love and time. It traces the shape of this city through the imprints of those I’ve loved and lost, through the quiet evolution of self that only home can witness. It is a poem of graves and gardens, of silver screens and silent prayers, of all the versions of me that Los Angeles has held. In every frame, every street I find the soft echoes of the sunshine and the spirits that guide me. Cartografía is my Los Angeles, tender and eternal.
