NOTE DI REGIA

DIRECTOR STATEMENT
Nelle forme del vento (In the Shapes of the Wind) is the first audiovisual outcome of a site-specific sound and visual art project that investigates the relationship between identity, language, memory, and soundscape within the territories of the Daunia Mountains, specifically between the municipalities of Faeto and Celle di San Vito. Developed within a participatory and community-oriented dimension, the project stems from the desire to listen to a territory through its deepest resonances: the sound, the voice, and the breath of the landscape. It is a work that questions the relationship between identity and memory, presence and absence, the human being and the land that inhabits them. The wind – an invisible and shifting element – becomes the symbol of a culture that traverses, transforms, and unites: a wind that carries with it the stories, the songs, and the silences of these places. Nelle forme del vento is born from an act of listening and a profound journeying through the territory. The research does not intend to “represent” these places, but rather to inhabit them poetically, allowing their inner sound to emerge. Through the voice and the sound of language, the project opens invisible windows – suspended spaces where stories are preserved and shared, to “capture a bit of the essence of the place.” The wind becomes a metaphor for listening and passage: an element that is invisible yet present, capable of carrying the voices, breaths, sounds, and stories of those who inhabit the land, as Cesare Viviani wrote: “Who will break the chains of doing, to sink and scatter their gaze into the shapes of the wind?” (from Cesare Viviani, L’opera lasciata sola). Traversing the inhabited centers of the Daunia Mountains, we entered into a dialogue with a territory that safeguards a stratification of memories and voices that are often submerged. These are places where time seems to expand, where listening can become both a political and a poetic gesture. Of particular interest in this context is the presence of the Franco-Provençal minority language, which is still alive in the municipalities of Faeto and Celle di San Vito. This ancient, fragile, and precious language preserves a unique phonetic and poetic heritage: a rhythm, an accent, and a sonority that tell of centuries of migration, encounters, and resistance. In our project, language becomes sound material and living memory, an integral part of the research: a linguistic landscape to be listened to, recorded, translated into song, and returned to the community as a shared echo. Listening to the language, in its nuances and its silences, is for us a political act of recognition and care. In the Daunia Mountains, where the power of the landscape and the fragility of depopulation coexist, the project also becomes an act of poetic resistance: listening in order not to forget, giving sound form to that which risks disappearing. Sound, even more than words, preserves traces of life and time: a voice, a song, an ancient accent, or the rustle of the wind become emotional archives, a shared heritage.
